Well done to all the children for all their hard work in our school garden!! Junior and Senior Infants planted peas. 1st & 2nd Class planted beetroot and onions. 3rd class planted potatoes. 4th class planted onions, chives, cabbage, radish, lettuce and beetroot. Finally, 5th and 6th Class planted cabbage, lettuce, onions and herbs. Well done everyone!!

Green Flag Success!
We have just been notified that we have been awarded our 5th Green Schools Flag for Travel. Well done to all on the Green Schools Committee and all of the children and families for their efforts to make this a reality!!!
In Tang National School we have been a green school since 2013. We will now have five Green Schools Flags. We were awarded our first green flag for Litter and Waste in 2013 and our second flag for Energy in 2015. We were also awarded our third green flag for Water in 2017 and our fourth flag for Biodiversity in 2021. We have now been awarded our fifth green flag for Travel in 2023!!!
Ms Hurley, Ms Behan, Chloe and Grace from the green school committee were invited to the flag awarding ceremony in the Radisson Hotel in Athlone on Wed 24th May 2023. At the ceremony the girls collected the flag with Ms Hurley on behalf of our school and the green school committee. After the ceremony, everyone enjoyed a lovely hot lunch and dessert before returning to school with our new flag and certificate! We are all looking forward celebrating the fantastic achievements of our whole school and community and celebrating with a Flag Raising Ceremony later in June. More details to follow.

An Taisce's National Spring Clean 2023

We carried out our 2nd travelling to school survey recently and we have seen an increase in children coming and going to school on the bus or carpooling. This is great to see as we are working towards our travel flag.

Action Day
On Friday the 18th, We held our Biodiversity Action Day. It certainly was an action packed day. Each class began the day with a treasure hunt outside. The children had great fun solving each riddle to find their next clue and eventually find the missing treasure. We then had a talk from Mr O Meara who told us all about the work of a bee keeper and how a beehive works. Thanks to the Heneghan Family for lending us their beehive and really making the day come to life for the children. We then had a performance from 3rd and 4th class all about the importance of bees in helping to maintain our biodiversity. Through the medium of song, dance and drama we learnt that to be a bee is quite a responsibility!!! We then watched a presentation from Ms McDonnells Class all about Swans. Finally, each class took part in a nature scanvengewr hunt. An informative and fun day was had by all.
Hedgehog Hibernaculum Competition
Congratulations to Jack and Holly for their wonderful Hedgehog Hibernaculum which will make its home in Tang N.S. Also, congratulations to all entries. It was a tough call to pick a winner and so there were prizes for all entries to our competition. Well done all!!
Bug Hotel
The Children in 3rd and 4th Class have just finished their Bug Hotels and they look fantastic. They even came up with some wonderful names for their hotels. We can't wait to see what wonderful creatures will be checking in to them!!

Bug Hotels in 3rd and 4th Class
3rdand 4th class are doing amazing work in increasing our school’s biodiversity. We can’t wait to see the finished products.
Bees love Dandelions
Senior Infants and 1st Class enjoyed working on their art designs for Cruinniú na nÓg Longford libraries 'Bees love Dandelions' competition. We were very keen to participate in this competition because we learned about the very important topic of letting wildflowers grow to assist bees in pollination. We want to spread the word to everyone so we can all play our part.
Waste Workshop in 3rd & 4th Class
Last Friday, 3rd and 4th class took part in a virtual workshop from the discovery centre. This was a prize we had won for Green Schools. We learned lots and had fun designing our litter posters.

Thank you to the Green School Committee for their informative powerpoint today providing us with many excellent tips on how to cut down on our energy usage and litter and waste in our school. We are working towards achieving the Biodiversity Flag and all the teachers and pupils are excited to help the Green School's Committee achieve the flag and help take care of our environment.

Water Pollution In Junior Infants
Freddie the fish likes to swim in fresh water. Unfortunately, when different materials and substances enter our water system, the water isn't so fresh any more for Freddie. We added some food colouring (chemicals), coffee essence (slurry), sand, oil and rubbish to demonstrate this .

Green School’s Flag Raising DayOn Wednesday 7th we held our Flag Raising Day in the school. We would like to thank Mr Pat Hughes for doing the honours of raising our flag. The children sang some songs and played some tunes on their tin whistles and fiddles. We then had a rap from 3rd and 4th class outlining our water journey. The poetry competition winners read out their poems and the Green School’s Committee received a certificate for their efforts. A great day was had by all
Green School’s Flag CollectionOn Wednesday 24th of May two of our Green School’s Committee went to collect the schools flag at an awards ceremony held in The Hudson Bay Hotel. We were delighted to have received our third green flag.

Water Action Day
Today we held our action day. All of the children looked wonderful dressed in blue. Each class had lots of fun doing water experiments, quizzes and 3rd and 4th class put on a wonderful performance. The children raised the issue of water conservation through the medium of song and drama. A fun filled day was had by all. Thank you to all of the parents for helping the children with their wonderful costumes. They looked terriffic.

Green Schools Poster Competition
We have just posted our entries to An Taisce's Green schools poster competition. The theme this year was Global Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. The standard of all entries was incredible. We have lots of talent in Tang!! Unfortunately we could only enter 20 posters towards the regional finals. The prizes are wonderful so fingers crossed!!! Look at our wonderful finalist posters.
Water Butt
We have installed our water butt. The monies raised from our bake sale helped us purchase this. We have also installed water hippos in all of our toilets. This will really help us to save lots of water. A big thank you to Pat for installing the water butt for us. It looks great!!!
Bake Sale

September 2016
The Green Schools Committee is up and running. We have been working hard reminding everybody about reducing, reusing and recycling. We have set up our recycling centre in the school and we can take your old batteries, phones and ink cartridges. We are sending out our water survey to Parents along with our newsletter to keep you updated on our progress so far. We will begin to audit our water usage and the results of this and our Action Plan to save water will be shared with you all soon.
